No, I mean what I said
Recently, a strange piece of news caught my eye. Apparently, I was misspelling the name of a country. In early December 2021, the country Turkey was supposed to be spelled Turkiye. This correction in spelling flew under my radar for close to a month.
Now, before anybody starts commenting about country names, I need to point out that there was a time when I was required to relearned that Burma was now called Myanmar. When I was born, there was a country called Kampuchea. Fortunately by the time I learnt to read, it was renamed Cambodia. I hated relearning new countries name. Yugoslavia suddenly became several countries depending the war on the ground. I was grateful that the name of the countries in the region did not appear on my geography exams.
A language is a dialect with an army and navy
I know that most Southern American hate to be called Yankee. Scottish or Welsh's people hate to be called Englishman. So I try to get everything correct. On a separate note, I wonder what happen to people who purchased flights to Turkiye before the name change. Will their ticket be denied? Or they be warned about the name change just before they are in Turkish air space?
