Mission and vision are terribly over-rated. Historically, military units became elite before they had motto. Functional families work without any mission or vision.

I also discount "values" when they are told over a meal or in the safety of a meeting room.

Nothing communicates values better when the team is called into action and you start to see sacrifice or people stepping up. Then it is a good time to hear their motivation.

I also need to warn that some leaders will only perform once and then recycle the story.

Or embellish their stories.
