It is not so much an ask culture or a guess culture.
It is more of what favours are free and which are not. It is like when I go to certain people's houses and then finding I have to ask for drinks versus the host telling me to help myself. Or asking me for my choice of beverage.
If you watch western sitcoms, both cultures are on display. Asians also change to their surroundings. Some are pleasant with friends and then become very demanding in shops.
As the choice for meal, I usually warn people that if it is anything I want, it is durian, offals or whatever exotic stuff that I recently discovered. Then I offer a binary choice of to narrow things down. Western or Asian? Any allergies or food that will not be eaten? Indecisive people get the offer of twenty minutes to decide or it will be McDonalds.
