I think that if we could manage our need for achievement or need for affiliation, the problem of wasting money would come to an end. Unfortunately, this would also affect one's ability to try new things. Perfect harmony sounds like stagnation. We do need to strike a balance in the willingness to fit into the world as well as not keeping up with the Jones.
