I think one mistake that people make is to assume that gaming or drinking (or whatever socially unapproved) culture is bad.
There is a false belief that only healthy habits like exercise or learning new skills are useful. The truth is if you like those healthy activities, great. But otherwise, it is not very helpful to keep failing. Is drawing better than writing? Is playing music better than playing video games?
The problem is the term addict. We assume that a person has lost control. I know of artists who can lose themselves writing a new song. Or playing a new song. Or drawing a masterpiece. But once the task or muse is over in hours or days, they are perfectly functional human beings.
One thing that I hate is be judged by the previous generation. I would not mind being a hunter but the modern society wants to pay me to code. (And pest extermination is different from hunting.) The modern society also pays people to play games or sing songs on YouTube. It also pays people to speculate in stocks or other worthless endeavours or create weapons.
